Chapter 1 – Understanding Business Communication in Today’s Workplace

The discussion of low-context and high-context cultures was a revelation. Coming from South Asia, I’ve lived with the different communication styles. I find that I automatically adapt my communication depending on which community I am dealing with.

  1. I find that to be very true. Depending on where you are and with whom you’re speaking, you naturally adapt your communication style. Of course, if you speak that other language, it really deepens the communication. Being able to communicate with different people is really a skill that we can all learn.

  2. I also enjoyed the discussion of high-context and low-context. In fact, I think one of the reasons that America is such a great place to live/work is our low-context environment: there are few secret codes and/or dynasty-type barriers. Everything is spelled out. On the other hand, I find traveling to foreign countries to be extremely fascinating because of the high-context environment.
